Ornamental and mandala tattoos in South Tyrol
Ornamental tattoos combine patterns, dots and symmetry into designs that follow the shape of your body. This includes mandalas, dotwork and geometric designs. At Herzstickl in Schlanders and Kaltern we plan them individually for the exact spot where they will sit.
Patterns, dots and symmetry
Ornamental is an umbrella term for decorative motifs: mandalas, lace patterns, floral ornaments, geometric shapes and jewellery-like elements. They are often combined with dotwork, where shading is built from many individual dots.
What they all share is precision. Symmetry, even spacing and clean lines are essential for an ornamental tattoo to look calm and harmonious.

Designed with the body
An ornamental tattoo shows its full effect when it follows the anatomy. A mandala on the elbow, a pattern along the spine or an ornament wrapping around shoulder and arm: the shape of the body becomes part of the design.
That is why we often draw ornamental designs directly onto the skin or adapt the stencil precisely to your proportions. This way the tattoo sits right even when you move.
Dotwork and geometric
Dotwork creates soft, grainy transitions that suit ornamental and geometric motifs especially well. Building it up takes patience, but the result looks alive and finely textured.
Geometric tattoos rely on clean lines, circles and shapes. Further down this page you can see which artists at Herzstickl in Schlanders in the Vinschgau valley and in Kaltern tattoo these styles.
Good to know
- Ornaments look especially good on the forearm, shoulder, back, elbow, knee and along the spine.
- Dotwork usually heals well but, like any tattoo, needs careful aftercare.
- Dots and lines with enough spacing stay clear for many years.
- Anything is possible, from single small elements to large connected pieces.

FAQ about Ornamental
What is the difference between ornamental and dotwork?
Ornamental describes the motif, meaning patterns and decorative shapes. Dotwork is a technique in which shading is created from dots. The two are often combined.
Can I extend a mandala later?
Yes, ornamental designs are very easy to extend and connect into larger pieces. If you are planning that, we take it into account from the start.
Are ornamental designs good for cover-ups?
Often yes, because dense patterns and dark areas can cover a lot. Whether it suits your old tattoo is something we look at during the consultation.
How does the request work?
