Cover-up tattoos in South Tyrol
A tattoo you no longer like does not have to stay the way it is. With a well-planned cover-up it becomes a new piece you are happy to show. At Herzstickl in Schlanders and Kaltern we tell you honestly what is possible and what is not.
How a cover-up works
It all starts with a consultation. Send us well-lit photos of your old tattoo through the request form, ideally taken straight on and from a little distance, so we can judge size, colours and lines.
We then develop a design that cleverly picks up and covers the old motif. We make sure the new tattoo does not just hide something but looks good in its own right.

Honest expectations
A cover-up is almost always bigger and darker than the old tattoo. Dark colours cover light ones, not the other way round, and very fine, light designs on top are rarely possible.
That is why we tell you openly which motifs and styles suit your cover-up. Blackwork, realism with dark areas or ornamental patterns often work particularly well, because they bring a lot of coverage and structure.
When laser makes sense
If the old tattoo is very dark, very bold or large, it can make sense to have it lightened first by a specialised laser clinic. Even a few treatments give us much more freedom in the new design.
Whether laser is needed is something we decide together after the consultation. The laser treatment itself is done by a specialist, and we then tattoo the cover-up in Schlanders in the Vinschgau valley or in Kaltern.
Good to know
- The new design is usually larger than the old one, so allow for enough space.
- Healing is the same as for a new tattoo, although the skin in that area can be a little more sensitive.
- A well-planned cover-up ages like any other tattoo; dark areas stay stable.
- Light, very small or very fine designs are usually not suitable as a cover-up.

FAQ about Cover-up
Can any tattoo be covered?
Many, but not all. It depends on the size, colour, density and placement of the old tattoo. Once we have seen your photos we will tell you honestly what is realistic.
What photos do you need?
Sharp photos in daylight, taken straight on, one close up and one from further away. A tape measure or ruler next to it helps us judge the size.
Do I need laser first?
Not always. For very dark or large tattoos, lightening at a specialised laser clinic can make sense. We will give you honest advice on this.
Can I choose any design I like?
We follow your wishes as far as possible. Sometimes the design has to be adapted so the old tattoo really disappears. We plan that together with you.
