Tattoo style
Blackwork tattoos in South Tyrol
Blackwork is all about black: strong contrast, graphic shapes and solid, even fills. The style feels bold and timeless and stays readable for many years. At Herzstickl in Schlanders and Kaltern we tattoo blackwork from minimal graphic pieces to large-scale work.
What defines blackwork
In blackwork we use black ink only. That ranges from graphic patterns and illustrations to negative space designs, where the skin itself forms the motif, all the way to large, fully blacked-out areas.
Thanks to the high contrast, blackwork tattoos look clear and powerful even from a distance. The style suits small pieces just as well as sleeves or back pieces.

Solid fills take technique
An even black area without patches or gaps is harder to achieve than it looks. The right needle choice, a calm build-up and a gentle approach to the skin are what count.
That is why we often split larger areas into several sessions. This lets the skin heal well, and the black ends up rich and even.
Blackwork as a cover-up
Because black has the strongest coverage, blackwork is one of the best ways to cover old tattoos. Graphic elements and dark areas can be placed exactly where the old motif needs to disappear.
If you want to cover a tattoo, have a look at our cover-up page as well. During a consultation in Schlanders in the Vinschgau valley or in Kaltern we will look at what is possible together.
Good to know
- Blackwork works almost anywhere on the body; large fills suit arms, legs and back particularly well.
- Solid fills can be a little more demanding during healing, so good aftercare matters.
- Black ages very steadily and keeps its contrast for many years.
- Any size is possible, from small graphic pieces to full sleeves.

FAQ about Blackwork
Is blackwork only suitable for large tattoos?
No. Small graphic designs in black have a strong impact too. Large fills are an option, not a requirement.
Can I extend a blackwork tattoo later?
Yes, blackwork is easy to extend and connect with new elements. If you are already thinking of a bigger project, we are happy to plan for it from the start.
Will I need several sessions?
For larger areas, usually yes. How many depends on the design, size and your skin, and we will discuss it with you in person.
How do I send a request?
Through the request form: describe your idea, the placement and a rough size, ideally with reference images. We will get back to you.
